Here’s a clear example of one of my favorite layouts, a very horizontal composition with a sharp vertical to break it.

So The Killer Is…Thursday, December 28th, 2006
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a fiend for murder mysteries. I devour Agatha Christie novels like Pez and can play Clue for hours on end. So this painting was really a treat for me. I’ve been asked a few times whom the killer is. I know who I think did it, but I’ll never say. I don’t want to make the viewer believe what I believe. I’d rather they bring themselves to the piece and take away what they see. I think art can tell you just as much about yourself as the viewer as it can about the artist who made it. By the way, if you think you know who did it, please let me know. I love hearing that.
Everyone changed from sketch to final, but only by a bit. Grandma and VioletsThursday, December 28th, 2006
My grandmother’s favorite color has always been violet and I knew that any painting for her should be saturated with it. I gave her this painting for Christmas 2003.
Originally, the setting was a fruit market. Those were all going to be purple eggplants. (Of which my grandmother is also fond.) Girl in a Red CoatThursday, December 28th, 2006
I like something red in a snow scene. This painting drew some inspiration from ‘Dr. Zhivago.’
Originally, I intended for her to be in a rose garden. I decided though that I wanted the coat to be the only color in the painting. Grandma and ButterfliesThursday, December 28th, 2006
My grandmother kept butterflies all around her house; images, sculptures, mounted butterflies, engravings. I gave this painting to her for Christmas 2003.

OutsideThursday, December 28th, 2006
This paining replaced ‘Young Man and Fish in Rainistorm’ as the largest I had done to that point, at 20″x30″. It was inspired in part by the Great Lawn in Central Park.
Please Do Not Feed The FlamingosThursday, December 28th, 2006
The young man is easily the tallest person I have ever painted.
