Old Man, Young Man and Armadillo

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Old Man, Young Man and ArmadilloThis is my first piece, painted in March of 2003, just before my 25th birthday. I can’t tell you what inspired the imagery. I just liked the idea of open space, the juxtaposition of young and old, and I’ve always liked armadillos. At the time I wore my hair just like the Young Man. Coincidence?

The theme of open fields is one that I return to very often, so I’m not surprised it figures into my first painting. I also immediately gravitated toward a heavy black outline. In my early pieces, I painted the outline. Later, I would begin inking the line with a Chartpak marker.

A Big Hello!

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Hi! Thanks for stopping by.

My name is Jay Venute and I’ve been working on the Doodle Park paintings since Spring of 2003. It’s the last week of 2006 as I write this and I just finished my most recent piece “Atomic Christmas #3″ this past Saturday. So before I can start showing my new stuff hot off the easel, I have to take you back about three and a half years, to where it all began. I’ll try to put the pieces in chronological order, though it does get hazy at times.

But first, a shameless plug. Whil painting is a labor of love, it’s also a labor for cash. To be perfectly blunt. That said, with the exceptions of those already in the possession of others, all originals are available for purchase. You can also order prints of any image you might like directly through this site.

Thanks for looking, guys. I really appreciate it, and hope the pieces make you happy.

And we’re off…
