This painting was heavily influenced by the works of Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. It’s one of my personal favorites.
QXR-5000 and Earth CreatureSaturday, December 30th, 2006
‘QXR-5000′ doesn’t stand for anything in particular. It was just the first series of letters and numbers that came to my head. QXR-5000 makes his second appearance here: Snow-Bot

Here’s a clear example of one of my favorite layouts, a very horizontal composition with a sharp vertical to break it.
Grandma and VioletsThursday, December 28th, 2006
My grandmother’s favorite color has always been violet and I knew that any painting for her should be saturated with it. I gave her this painting for Christmas 2003.
Originally, the setting was a fruit market. Those were all going to be purple eggplants. (Of which my grandmother is also fond.) Girl in a Red CoatThursday, December 28th, 2006
I like something red in a snow scene. This painting drew some inspiration from ‘Dr. Zhivago.’
Originally, I intended for her to be in a rose garden. I decided though that I wanted the coat to be the only color in the painting. Ethan and His ElephantThursday, December 28th, 2006

This paining replaced ‘Young Man and Fish in Rainistorm’ as the largest I had done to that point, at 20″x30″. It was inspired in part by the Great Lawn in Central Park.
Girl In A Yellow DressThursday, December 28th, 2006
This was a bit of a new direction for me at the time. I’m not sure what made me apply the shadow along the left-hand side of the figure, when I had never done that before (or really since.) Sometimes individual pieces call for special treatment. This painting was stolen while being exhibited. I did eventually receive payment for it, but never got the chance to know who owns it or where it is now. I hope wherever it is, someone is enjoying it.
