The Amazing Backyard Adventures of Space BoySaturday, December 30th, 2006
That Atomic Age inspiration I mentioned before is apparent in this one, I think. I filled the street with only ranch-style homes, kept the palette mainly to pastels, and threw in some of those old metallic space toys that were full of lead and never recalled and now sell for obscene amounts of money on Ebay. When I look at this painting now, I notice that I completely copied my childhood backyard at my parent’s house.
Grandma and ButterfliesThursday, December 28th, 2006
My grandmother kept butterflies all around her house; images, sculptures, mounted butterflies, engravings. I gave this painting to her for Christmas 2003.

Young Man in Swimming PoolThursday, December 28th, 2006
Around the time I painted this, somewhere in the summer of 2003, I began to become fascinated with design of the mid 20th century. Atomic Age ranch style houses would begin showing up from this point onward.

This was the first painting I ever sold. Selling a piece is a bittersweet experience. I definitely form a connection with each piece as I’m creating it, and it’s a little tough to sever that connection. But this is really outweighed by the idea of someone else enjoying what I’ve made. This piece really brought home to me that I had the power to affect people, to make them happy. Even when I’m not there with them. This is also the first appearance of the little white dog. He’ll continue to pop up in future works. In fact, he’s in a piece I just completed this past Saturday, ‘Atomic Christmas #3.’
